![]() ![]() ![]() No one's going to barge in and demand shit to get done on short notice or talk down to you by pulling their ranks. You're no longer Airman Snuffy or Sgt John Doe you're either mister or miss. I was treated with respect for the quality of my work by anyone from E-3 to O-6/GG-14. Need I say more? It's even more reassuring when you work closely with airmen, sailors, soldiers, and marines who go through the drama on a daily basis. Got politely asked to stay late? Your program manager will be in the Contractor Officer's Representative's (COR) office the first thing tomorrow morning, working out overtime pay issues. ![]() But generally speaking, pulling overtime without pay isn't necessarily the way of making yourself stand out in this world. If my contract says I work 40 hours a week, it means I am out the door on the dot. My contract stipulated that I don't do overtime without extra pay. No CBTs, writing evals and decs, CC's calls, a myriad of appointments that will keep you away from your office that you will eventually have to catch up on by staying late at night or coming in on weekends (I can't remember how many weekends I spent at work while I was AD). When I put in 40 hours a week, I actually put in solid 40 hours of work as stipulated in my employment contract. For the first six months, I just couldn't be happier because: I separated in Apr 2015, worked as a contractor for two years. I still loved being a linguist/SIGINT analyst and especially loved intel work I just wanted to continue my intelligence career without the stress factors. Not that I was in Afghanistan getting shot at every day on an 18-month deployment every three years, but I hit my threshold.Īlso frustrating was the fact that I could never get to do core-SIGINT missions because of my foreign contacts in my family, limited assignment opportunities, working 60-70 hours a week (no, really), and the ever-increasing load of military BS really took a toll on my mental and personal life. 3,400 flight hours, deployed 6 times in support of OIF/OEF (not using my language), went TDY to Korea on numerous occasions, worked as a QC authority on backlog and a unit SME while carrying my weight as an NCO. During my 8-year assignment there, I got approx. I was determined to make every moment count and couldn't have been more excited.Ībout 6 years into it (IPCOT'd), I called it it and decided to move on. I was dead sure that I finally found my lifetime career.įast forward through SERE and IQT/MQT, I got my first assignment in Kadena in 2007. The instructors all noted that I was the first person to break the "native speakers are the worst cryptologic linguists" stigma, so imagine my sense of accomplishment. I made the top grad at Goodfellow by working my ass off. I didn't have to go to DLI for being a native speaker and was lucky enough to choose my own mother tongue for my target language. I joined the AF in 2002 as an aircraft maintainer and cross-trained into Korean Airborne Linguist in 2005. I had done my research for good two years for my post-AF career prospects as a civilian intelligence professional before my last enlistment ended in Apr 2015. ![]() Everybody's case is unique, and this is solely meant to be thought-provoking for those planning on deucing out or even considering it for $$$.
